Arts and Dementia Care PhD Scholarship

A partnership award with the Dementia Research Centre, Institute of Neurology, University College London

London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London.

The demography of Western Europe and North America is rapidly ageing. The numbers of people closely affected by dementias will soon reach tens of millions (Stephan & Brayne, 2010). There is growing interest in the role of the arts in the experiences and care of people living with dementias. This scholarship award invites innovative proposals for related research study from creative professionals across the sector including: practitioners, producers, curators, choreographers, directors, administrators, sociologists and anthropologists.

The doctoral study will intersect and be supported by London College of Fashion’s Visual Arts and Better Living Research agenda . In addition, it will be linked with University College London’s Institute of Neurology’s Dementia Research Centre, forming part of the legacy of the  ‘Created Out of Mind’ residency at The Hub at Wellcome Collection, which supported a multidisciplinary research approach toward the arts and dementias, working with people with dementias and neuroscientists, psychologists, gerontologists, carers, visual artists, musicians, curators and a wide range of arts organisations. The award supports full-time study however part-time study is preferred so that this may evolve in sync with the legacy of the ‘Created Out of Mind’ residency.
